Heavy bleeding

If you’re soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours, that’s not normal. This could be a condition called menorrhagia. Speak to a doctor or go to a clinic for help.

Normal cycle

A normal menstrual cycle is usually 21–35 days, with bleeding lasting 3–7 days. Average blood loss is around 30–80ml. If your cycle varies slightly, that’s generally okay, but if you notice abnormal differences, it’s important to get medical advice.

Painful periods

Cramps are common, but if your pain stops you from living your daily life, it’s time to get medical advice. Conditions like endometriosis may be the cause.

Spotting

Bleeding between cycles can point to infections, hormonal imbalances, or other conditions that need a doctor’s attention.

Irregular periods

Are your cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days? Or, are you missing several periods in a row? Don’t ignore it; these may signal hormonal or thyroid issues.

Tips

Stay hydrated and eat balanced, nourishing meals. Try to maintain your exercise routine to help alleviate cramps and aches, and do your best to manage stress.
