Just be strong!
Nope, it doesn’t work like that. Anxiety, depression, panic disorder, and other mental health conditions can affect anyone. When someone has a mental health issue, it’s not just about being strong or trying harder. It’s like needing a doctor when you’re sick. Sometimes, you need professional help to feel better.

Medication will solve the problem
For some people, the process of finding a suitable medication for their condition can take some time. It’s not a guarantee that the first medication you’re prescribed will immediately help your symptoms. Be patient and let your therapist know about any unpleasant side-effects. You may have to try a couple of medications before finding one that helps.

Mental health issues are obvious
Not really. Many people are high-functioning, which means they can do their jobs, spend time with friends and family, and appear to have it all together on the surface. Yet, they could be struggling internally. They may often isolate themselves from others, but pretend to be okay in the company of others.

Mental illness doesn’t exist in our culture
It’s a misconception that mental illness is only prevalent in Western societies. It’s perhaps spoken of more openly in those communities, but mental health problems affect people across all cultures and contexts. The underlying struggles with anxiety, depression, trauma, and more are human and universal.

Depression is forever
Depression can take a toll on your long-term mental state, but the heartening news is that you can feel better. With good care and treatment, you might just have more good days than expected! This means getting help, taking your medication (if prescribed), and being proactive at doing things that contribute to a more positive mental state.
