- E. coli is a specific type of bacteria that usually lives in our intestines. It is mostly harmless. In fact, it helps us digest food.
- The problem is that some types of E. coli can cause serious infections, especially if we eat food or drink water that’s been contaminated with it. In severe cases, this harmful E. coli can lead to stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and even kidney problems.
- To avoid getting sick, it’s important to wash your hands regularly, cook meat thoroughly, and clean fresh fruits and vegetables before eating. Harmful E. coli strains are typically transmitted through contaminated food and water, especially undercooked ground beef, unpasteurised milk, and fresh produce. Person-to-person transmission can also happen, especially in environments where there’s poor hygiene. Stay safe by being strict about your own hygiene!
