The South African government has declared foodborne illnesses a national disaster and is taking action to protect public health.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • More health inspectors are being hired to ensure businesses meet safety standards.
  • The deaths of children aged 12 and under from foodborne illnesses must be reported.
  • A R500 million fund will help township and rural businesses improve hygiene and infrastructure.

How you can stay healthy:

  • Buy food from trusted sellers. This will help ensure that your food comes from clean and reputable sources.
  • Always wash your hands before handling any food. Also, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, cook meat properly; and avoid cross-contamination.
  • Alert local authorities if you notice poor hygiene in food outlets.
