Understand your illness

A cold usually comes with a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, a sore throat, and mild gland swelling, and typically clears up within about a week. The flu or other illnesses tend to hit harder, bringing more intense symptoms like a high fever, extreme fatigue, and muscle aches. If your symptoms linger for longer than two weeks, that’s your cue to check in with a doctor rather than pushing through.

Check your breathing

Pay close attention to your breathing before you exercise. If you’re unusually short of breath or notice phlegm sitting in your chest, it’s a clear sign your body isn’t ready for physical exertion. In this case, rest is essential to support recovery and avoid putting unnecessary strain on your lungs.

Heart rate

Checking your heart rate can give you a clear snapshot of how ready your body is to exercise. Take your resting pulse first thing in the morning. For most adults, a normal range falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute. If your heart rate is higher than usual or climbs rapidly as soon as you start moving, it’s a sign your body needs more time to recover before exercising.

The neck test

This is a simple way to decide whether you should exercise or rest. If your symptoms are above the neck, such as a runny nose or sore throat, gentle movement may be fine if you’re feeling up to it. However, symptoms below the neck, including chest congestion, body aches, or fever, are clear signals to rest and give your body time to recover.

Medication

When antibiotics are prescribed, finishing the full course is a vital part of recovery even if you start feeling better. Stopping too soon can allow the infection to return or worsen, which is especially risky with more serious illnesses like bronchitis.

Ease back in

As you start feeling better, ease back into exercise rather than jumping straight into your usual routine. Listen to your body, rest when you need to, and avoid overexertion, as pushing too hard can slow down recovery. Gradual movement, combined with nourishing food, helps your body regain strength safely.
