According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), there have been clusters of typhoid fever in the Tshwane areas of Hammanskraal and Bronkhorstspruit. Still to be determined is the source of the infections.

The number of cases are limited for now, but it’s worth noting that most recent infections in Hammanskraal have been among children under 15 years of age.

The good news is that so far, no typhoid bacteria have been found in treated municipal water. Still, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions, especially when handling water and food.

    Protect yourself and your family:

    • Boil water or use bottled water if you’re uncertain about tap water.
    • Wash your hands often, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
    • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with safe water.
    • See a doctor or go to the clinic if you or your child develop symptoms such as fever lasting several days, headache, stomach pain, or diarrhoea.
    • Typhoid fever is treatable and preventable. Early medical attention and simple hygiene habits can stop its spread.
